John 10:11–16 (KJV)
“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep. The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.”
Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd, and I love that picture of how much He cares for us. He’s not like someone who just watches a flock for pay and runs when danger comes. He stays! He’s willing to lay down His life for His sheep. The word good isn’t just about being kind—it’s faithful, protective, and selfless.
What really hits me is that Jesus knows us. He knows our fears, our mistakes, and even the little joys that no one else notices. He sees the parts of us we sometimes try to hide—the ones we hesitate to share—and still loves us fully.
Jesus also mentions “other sheep…which are not of this fold.” His love isn’t just for me or the people I know. He wants everyone to be included, helping them experience the same kind of love He shows us.
In everyday life, this reminds me—and us—that:
· When life feels overwhelming, we can trust Jesus to guide and protect us.
· Because He knows us personally, we can bring our real fears and struggles to Him honestly.
· We can look for ways to care for others, especially those who feel lost or left out, just like He models for us.
Jesus, the Good Shepherd, knows us, takes care of us, and makes room for everyone. He calls us to listen, follow, and show the same kind of love He shows us.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for staying close to us. When we feel afraid, unsure or overwhelmed, help us trust You and follow Your lead. Teach us to loosen our grip on control and rest in Your care. Shape our hearts to love others the way You do.
Amen.
