Day 22 – Saturday, March 13

RCPC Greatest Hit from Jeanne Pritchard in 1985

Matthew 3:7-10

But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit worthy of repentance. Do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor’; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

Repenting of False Security

I’m sorry. That’s my name, Jane Dow Sorry. Hi!

I’m sorry. That’s me – a sorry person. Not much here to see.

I’m sorry. Yeh, man. I’ve got a sorry attitude toward this life. It’s sure not much.

I’m sorry. Oh, yes, I AM. I’ve heard my pastor preach about sin and I think it’s just AWFUL. I’m sorry people are so bad, and I’m sorry about all those people who are starving to death. SOMEBODY ought to feed them! And I’m sorry about the poor people in the big cities who don’t have any place to sleep at night – there ought to be SOMEBODY doing something about that! I sure and sorry about the terrible state this world is in!

I’m sorry. I’m sorry, Lord, about the sin and pain in this world. I’m sorry about the hungry, the lonely, the lost. Help me to know that there is not wall around my pretty world keeping the stink of poverty, the misery of alienation SOMEWHERE ELSE. I’ve used the false security of my smug comfort and the blessings you’ve given me to blind me to the needs right around me. These blessings that I do enjoy are yours – and are mine only to be shared.

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me to use “I’m sorry” as a springboard to action and not as an empty comment to ease my own conscience. Amen
